A Nonprofit Religious Group Baits the IRS
I’ve written before about the often sticky combination of nonprofit status, political speech, and tax regulations (see here, here, here, and here), but Bill Keller — of the nonprofit Liveprayer.com, not the New York Times — might win the prize for the gummiest such mix after calling Barack Obama “God’s enemy.”
It’s hard to see why Keller’s organization hasn’t been made to open its wallet to the IRS, whose rules about not endorsing or condemning specific candidates are pretty clear. There’s certainly a case to be made for protecting speech that’s political in nature, but Keller’s bomb-tossing ain’t it.
