AFP Urging Fundraising Consultants to Play Nice
Intrigued by the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ call for a congressional ban on percentage-based fundraising, I dropped the organization a note to ask whether it offers members any kind of endorsement or recognition — an AFP seal of approval — for adhering to its ethical standards. No, responded AFP CEO Paulette Maehara in an e-mail,
but we do ask our members to emphasize their adherence to the AFP Code of Ethics in all of their donor publications and solicitations. We also ask our members to share the AFP Code of Ethics with their respective boards of directors and in many cases boards will formally adopt the Code of Ethics. We encourage donors to ask questions about fundraising staff and their compliance with a fundraising code of ethics.
AFP has just introduced a new business membership category which will be focused on businesses that provide services in the non-profit market place. Every business member will be required to sign the code which has recently been updated adding 7 new standards that focus on the for-profit sector serving the non-profit client. New business members will be able to utilize a special AFP logo that advertises their adherence to the AFP Code of Ethics and AFP will urge all members to utilize the services of these business members. The revised code can be found at the following link: http://www.afpnet.org/ka/ka-3

The logo Ms. Maehara refers to is exactly what I had been thinking — some way for for-profits to tell nonprofits quickly and easily that conduct their business ethically. With Congress taking a new look at how nonprofits raise money, I think this is a terrific idea. Not only is it the right thing to do, but it’s also a good way for the industry to separate itself from the more sleazy practitioners that give everyone a bad name. | 501(c)
