All the News That’s Fit to Issue a Cease-and-Desist Order About
A few random thoughts on the Associated Press’s stated intention to lean on bloggers it feels lift too much of its stuff in their posts:
- Good luck enforcing that.
- Will AP then stop cribbing bloggers’ material?
- A great deal of AP copy is nothing more than rewritten newspaper stories, so it’s got some chutzpah calling out bloggers.
- AP certainly has the right to defend its brand. But is this really the best way to do it?
- AP is a nonprofit with a mission whose mission is to “be the essential global news network, providing distinctive news services of the highest quality, reliability and objectivity with reports that are accurate, balanced and informed.” Seems to me that bloggers using its material would be a boon to that mission, not a hindrance. | 501(c)

I don’t think the AP understands that links to their stories is a good thing, since it ultimately drives traffic back to them. It’s pretty clear from their attempt, that unlike most bloggers, the AP does not play well with others.
