Changing the World, a Buck at a Time

by Tom Durso on December 21st, 2007

The service I use for my personal blog sends out a monthly e-newsletter highlighting posters who are addressing timely matters, and in the spirit of the season, this month’s edition links to a handful of blogs that deal with gift-giving. One of the highlighted efforts is Dollar Philanthropy, whose mission is “to harness the power of the blogosphere to create a network [of] individuals who will donate a single dollar each week to a reputable nonprofit organization.”

A dollar doesn’t seem like much and that is precisely the point. However, when combined, each of our individual dollars can make a huge difference to a local nonprofit that is seeking to serve a need and improve the community around them.

Blogger Carol Kirshner hasn’t done much posting of late, which is too bad, because I love this idea. It incorporates the notion of finding one or two causes and supporting them exclusively, rather than spreading one’s donations around, but more than that, it emphasizes that you don’t need deep pockets to make a difference. For half of the price of a medium cup of Starbucks, you can have an impact. Isn’t sacrificing half a cup of coffee a week worth that? | 501(c)

    Well, I don’t know about a $1 a week, but I’ve got a little gift for you…

Thanks for the kind words. I’m suffering from some serious blog guilt for being so neglectful of DP. I’ve just started maternity leave and the last few months of working and mom-to-be exhaustion have taken a toll on my ability to conjure a cogent sentence. Now that things are calmer (in some ways), I am feeling more like I can write.

I expect that 2008 and all the new life lessons before me will translate into some interesting new perspectives.

Thanks again for the shout out!!

No need to apologize for taking some time to be a mom, Carol. Best of luck in 2008!
