Even the Mighty Google Sometimes Can’t Get Out of Its Own Way

by Tom Durso on June 16th, 2008

Last week Google for Non-Profits opened up its online group to full-fledged discussion, with 4,500 people signing up to participate in its ongoing conversations. I’m not a member of the group (yet), but it sounds as if something went a bit awry. Two days after declaring it open for business, Google moderator Galen Panger posted a mea culpa over the company’s mishandling of the transition from passive listserv to active discussion board:

First of all, on behalf of everyone on the Google for Non-Profits team, please accept our sincere apologies for the confusion and inconvenience caused by Wednesday’s botched opening of the Google for Non-Profits discussion group. I know the flood of e-mails caught many people off-guard and caused inboxes to overflow, and for that we are really sorry. Unfortunately, a glitch in our settings caused everyone’s replies to be broadcast to the entire group. In addition, we made a mistake in deciding to convert the newsletter group to a discussion group, rather than inviting everyone into a separate discussion group.

It’s tempting to revel in the sight of an online giant tripping over its own shoelaces, but Google is handling this pretty damn adroitly. In addition to the seemingly sincere apology noted above, Panger posted three ways the company planned to fix the mess, and he closed by apologizing again. Seriously, can you ask for anything more? Especially considering the low, low cost (as in free) of the Google for Non-Profits products? | 501(c)
