Good News for Nonprofit IT Directors Looking for Larger Budgets
Nonprofits raised 19 percent more money online in 2007 than in the prior year, according to a new study from the Nonprofit Technology Network and M+R Strategic Services. This was despite the facts that e-mail open rates, click-through rates, and response rates all dropped in the same period and that over half of the surveyed firms’ subscribers "did not take any online advocacy actions over the course of 2007." The 2008 eNonprofits Benchmarks Study, which collected data from 21 nonprofits in the environmental, legal/civil rights, health, and international aid fields, offers nonprofits usable information to assess their own online efforts and compare them to what others are doing.
Each nonprofit will be different, of course, but I think some general lessons can be gleaned:
- Get your website in shape.
- Consider shifting some of those marketing dollars away from direct mail and into technology solutions.
- Make sure your development and communications people are reasonably tech-savvy.
- Reach out more and more to younger donors, people in their 20s and 30s, who take technology for granted and use it for an amazing array of tasks in their daily lives.
