Hopes and Dreams: Are You Living Them, or Is the Best Yet to Come?
Later this month — on the 24th, to be exact — moms and dads across the country will let their kids cut school for a great cause: the annual Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day.
As someone who’s still, after nearly 20 years of full-time work, trying to figure out what he wants to be when he grows up, I’m forever interested in why people choose to do the work they do. I think it’s great that on April 24 thousands of kids will leave their classrooms for a little real-life education, seeing their parents in a far different environment than they usually do. Maybe it’ll get them thinking about their own pending careers.
Meanwhile, the b5 Business Channel is running a contest this month pegged to Take Our Sons and Daughters to Work Day, and it also coincides nicely with my curiosity about career choices. It’s simple: Tell me, in the comments section below, how your experiences as a child led to your grown-up decisions. Tell me about what you thought you wanted to be when you grew up … or about what influenced your decision to do the work you do now … or about what dreams you still harbor … the specifics are up to you.
The 10 blogs that receive the most comments on the topic will comprise the pool from which channel editor Kelly Phillips Erb — yes, the taxgirl herself — will choose finalists. She’ll pick a favorite comment from each of those 10 most commented blogs
to be posted on the main b5media blog on April 21, then ask readers to vote for their favorite from among those 10. The most commented entry from April 21 to 30 wins its writer a gift card to Barnes & Noble for $25.
The fine print:
- Comments must be posted between 12:01 a.m. EST on April 1 and 11:59 p.m. EST on April 20.
- You must include your full name and your e-mail address in the correct field with your comment. We won’t publish your e-mail address, but we do need contact information for the winning entry. We respect your privacy, and we will not send you anything unrelated to your entry in this contest.
