Mining the Mission | Lending Cupid a Helping Hand

by Tom Durso on February 14th, 2008

Skip that rope! When I was a kid in grade school, every year my classmates and I would participate in the Jump Rope for Heart, an American Heart Association fundraiser through which we’d gather pledges and collect donations, then spend the day in the gym in a mass rope-skipping marathon. Decades (cough) later, the event is still hopping, I’m happy to report. As a kid, I loved Jump Rope for Heart — it was a day out of class, a day to play, really. As a parent and someone who is fully aware of the ever-increasing incidence of childhood obesity, I’m thrilled to see AHA continue to join with schools in the vital effort to make physical activity something fun and desirable for kids.

The association’s mission is a simple one: “Building healthier lives, free of cardiovascular diseases and stroke.” On this day, when we celebrate the allegorical nature of the human heart, it’s appropriate to offer a nod of thanks to those seeking to make its reality as healthy as possible.
