National Night Out Leaves Executive Director on the Hot Seat
Last night was National Night Out, the annual initiative from the National Association of Town Watch that seeks to use community vigils and parties to raise awareness of local crime- and drug-prevention efforts. A noble effort, to be sure, but this year’s effort was overshadowed by criticism of the hefty salary that NATW head Matt Peskin hauls in.
Donors, of course, give because they believe in a nonprofit’s cause, not to support lavish earnings. At the same time, higher salaries enable organizations to attract more effective executives, so one can make the case that superior pay leads to greater fulfillment of mission. This is where the importance of metrics comes into play. When the payment issue begins to receive greater attention than the organization’s activities, it’s time to go public with justification. One can argue that that’s not fair, but that misses the point — nonprofits are quasi-public endeavors, depending on people’s confidence and largess to continue. Once the former is compromised, the latter is sure to follow. | 501(c)
