Nonprofit Profile | A Renewed Call to Step Forward
We’re reaching the end of National Volunteer Week, the annual commemoration of those special people who provide countless nonprofits with crucial sweat equity. Points of Light & Hands On Network wants to keep that recognition going year-round. The organization lists as its core mission "to inspire, equip and mobilize people to take action that changes the world. We transform people and communities through civic entrepreneurship." Here’s what I love about Points of Light: This is no stodgy, crunchy nonprofit holding hands and asking pretty-please won’t you help? No, it is picking up on cultural changes that hold the promise of real action:
Across America, technology-driven social networking and mobile technology are redefining the nature of interaction, shaping a new culture of communication. There is a resurgence of interest in the inner workings of government, schools, community and social change. There is a new energy around the idea of individual and collective exchange to create value and meaning that results in safe, connected and healthy communities. People are starting to ask how they can be involved and what they can do.
Pretty powerful, huh? Points of Light links people, for-profits, nonprofits, and governments to inspire, support, and actualize "collaborative citizen leadership" — you know, the kind of groups that figure out what needs to happen for real change to occur, and then get it done. Goodness knows, in this day and age, we certainly need more of that. | 501(c)
