Nonprofit Profile | Giant Steps
The annual display of orgiastic excess and self-promotion that is the Super Bowl takes place next weekend. The New York Giants and New England Patriots will conclude two weeks of mindless hype, absurd media coverage, and countless beer commercials with an actual football game that will, unfortunately, be so immersed in consumption that the National Football League’s considerable nonprofit involvement will be overlooked easily.
Which is a shame. For decades the NFL has had a very public partnership with the United Way, and individual teams do quite a bit in their respective communities. That deserves to be recognized.
For the NFC champion Giants, the focus is largely on fighting childhood obesity. The Giants have teamed up with the American Heart Association and the New Jersey Education Association in promoting What Moves U, a program in New Jersey, Connecticut, and New York schools that encourages physical fitness and healthy living. The team also runs several programs with the United Way of New York City, links with the foster-home-to-adoption nonprofit the Heart Gallery of New Jersey for a holiday party, supports the Ronald McDonald House of New York City, runs a blood drive on behalf of the New York Blood Center, facilitates numerous donation drives during games at Giants Stadium, and joins with Rock and Wrap It Up! to deliver unused food from home games to a Manhattan soup kitchen.
Think about all that the next time you want to make fun of Michael Strahan’s ugly mug.
Next week: the Patriots’ nonprofit partnerships.
