Nonprofit Profile | Patriot Games
Like the New York Giants, their opponent in Sunday’s Super Bowl, the New England Patriots have developed relationships with numerous nonprofits working in the community. The team, in fact, started its own nonprofit, the New England Patriots Charitable Foundation, “to assist a variety of charitable organizations and programs by supporting their educational, family and health initiatives.” Its grantees include the Robert K. Kraft Family Blood Donor Center at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, the Center for Compassionate Care at Northwestern University, the Jordan Boys & Girls Club of Chelsea, and a variety of educational institutions. The foundation also distributes grants to regional charities, donates tickets and other items for fundraising purposes, and sends players to charity functions.
The Patriots have developed a novel idea to get their fans involved, too: Massachusetts drivers can help out by purchasing a Patriots license plate; $28 of the $40 fee goes to the foundation.
Among the team’s nonprofit partners are the Boys and Girls Clubs of Boston; the R.O.S.E. (Regaining One’s Self-Esteem) Fund, which assists survivors of domestic abuse ; Junior Achievement; and the United Way of Massachusetts Bay.
There will be a winner Sunday, and a loser, but both teams — all NFL teams, actually — should be commended for giving something back to the fans who support them so passionately.
Oh, one more thing: Patriots 37, Giants 17.
