Nonprofits Getting Pummeled at the Pump

by Tom Durso on May 18th, 2008

Yesterday, at a local gas station near my home, I saw something I had never seen before: gasoline selling for more than $4 per gallon. Granted, it was premium, but still. For nonprofits that hit the road often, that’s a hefty expenditure, and one that appears unlikely to move in a positive direction for any significant length of time. In suburban Baltimore, things have gotten even hairier with Howard County’s halting of a program that provided discount fuel and maintenance services to several of the county’s nonprofits.

County officials said they recently discovered that providing the discounts violates IRS rules, and they cut off the services May 2. The result has been a squeeze on nonprofit budgets, which has been exacerbated by the recent rise in gas prices.

Perhaps the only good to come out of these troubled economic times is that they will allow nonprofits to make a crystal-clear case about the desperate need to fund operational expenses. Donating to programming is terrific, but unrestricted gifts that can be used to heat office and gas up delivery cars are needed now more than ever. | 501(c)
