Something for the Red Cross to Be Proud Of

by Tom Durso on December 18th, 2007

Maybe it’s the former PR guy in me, but even as the fallout from the Red Cross’s cashiering of CEO Mark Everson becomes more sordid, I find some very positive stuff for the organization to hang its hat on. As the NonProfit Times reported recently, not only did the married Everson have an affair with a married subordinate, she is now said to be pregnant, and the Red Cross is now auditing his expenses to determine whether Everson used organization money to conduct the relationship.

Now for the good news: Everson came on board preaching a message of accountability, and it sounds as if the Red Cross’s senior leadership was listening. Everson was pink-slipped a mere nine days after the affair was reported to the board, and while sources at the charity told the Times that the relationship was an open secret, at least the board acted quickly once it was notified in an official capacity. That, I think, is the message the Red Cross must hammer home to the donor community: “We truly thought we had found an effective CEO in Mark Everson, but once we heard about such improper behavior, we acted immediately. We hope we still have your trust.” | 501(c)
