Survey Says: Nonprofit Giving Climate Looking Sunny

by Tom Durso on December 21st, 2007

Nonprofits are busy reaching out to their donors to convince them to make that end-of-year gift for tax purposes, and according to Indiana University’s Center on Philanthropy, they may be more successful this year than last. The NonProfit Times reported yesterday that based on its recent semiannual survey, nonprofit fundraisers are more confident about giving prospects than they were this time last year. Interestingly, outside fundraisers, typically more optimistic, this season are seeing poorer prospects than their in-house peers. Additionally, “[h]uman services, public benefit, environment/animal and international nonprofit fundraisers were also notably less optimistic about the current and future climates,” which the Center attributed to the current state of the economy:

“Prior research shows that human services nonprofits are among the first to see an increased demand for services when the economy slows,” said Eugene R. Tempel, executive director of the Center on Philanthropy. “In those circumstances, such organizations often also face declining financial support from households, foundations and corporations. Even though the economy is not in a recession, uncertain economic conditions may be of particular concern for these organizations.”

As terrific as this news is, it’s also disheartening, if understandable, to read that human services organizations have more difficulty raising money during those times when they need it most, when the economy puts the biggest strain on their resources. | 501(c)
