The Buzz on Buzzwords: Just Say No
It’s one thing to use jargon if you’re presenting to your peers at a professional development conference or writing a how-to piece in a trade journal that covers your industry. But when you’re asking regular people for their help? When you’re asking them to volunteer their time or their money?
Yet it happens. In the wake of the Chronicle of Philanthropy’s recent series on the dangers of jargon, nonprofit marketing guru Nancy Schwartz has offered some very usable tips on how to keep your pitches in English that your audience can understand. Her advice is spot-on; I’d add only a thought, saying that it is wise to “pass the copy on” not only “to your jargon-hating editor,” but also to a trustworthy member of the audience that you’re trying to reach. Oh, also this: Get yourself a think skin. The message is a lot more important than the messenger. | 501(c)
